Hands-on workshops and events with the broader MIT innovation ecosystem

Each year, the members of the Practical Impact Alliance convene at MIT for an annual meeting and hands-on design activities at D-Lab. The annual meeting is followed by the MIT Scaling Development Ventures conference and the Global IDEAS Challenge Innovation Showcase.

In 2016, these events took place March 30th – April 2nd and we were excited to welcome many PIA members and guests to campus for a dynamic few days.

MIT Scaling Development Ventures Conference

The annual MIT Scaling Development Ventures Conference brings together perspectives from the international development and business communities to examine the best ways to bring poverty-alleviating solutions to market at scale. PIA members have exclusive networking opportunities with invited guests and special opportunities to serve as presenters and attend sessions.

The 2016 conference convened some of the world's most inspiring social entrepreneurs, at all stages of development, to explore strategies, models, and resources that can help development ventures achieve scale for significant social impact. This year's conference featured keynote addresses by Hannes Van Rensburg, Founder of Fundamo, and Ann Mei Chang, Chief Innovation Officer and Executive Director of the U.S. Global Development Lab at USAID.  The program also included a variety of sessions featuring leaders from across diverse industries, organizations, and geographies. Learn more about past conferences here.

The MIT Scaling Development Ventures (SDV) conference is a collaborative effort among MIT centers oriented toward international development and entrepreneurship. The main organizing partners are D-Lab, the Legatum Center, MIT Priscilla King Gray Public Service Center, the Media Lab Entrepreneurship Program, International Development Innovation Network, Comprehensive Initiative on Technology Evaluation, Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, and MISTI. Members of the Practical Impact Alliance also have the opportunity to provide input into conference content.

IDEAS Global Challenge

The MIT SDV conference is closely integrated with the IDEAS Global Challenge Innovation Showcase. PIA members have special access to the Innovation Showcase, as well as the opportunity to participate as judges. Additionally, this year PIA sponsored a challenge focused on mobile phones and behavior change, which originated in the related 2015 PIA working group.  We were thrilled that several winning student teams had ideas related to the PIA challenge, including the grand prize winner, ValueMe.  Read more here.
